Strolling through the historic streets of Copenhagen, visitors may find their eyes drawn to crowds of cheerful cyclists on their daily commutes, swimmers enjoying a dip in one of the many harbor baths, or residents enjoying a breath of fresh air at one of the city’s picturesque parks. Caught up by the sights and sounds of the city, visitors may not notice the Google Street View car rolling through town, equipped with an array of technologically advanced air quality measurement sensors which detect a number of particles like black carbon (soot), fine and ultrafine particulate matter, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen dioxides. Tucked into the heart of the city, they may also look over Copenhagen’s Street Lab, a center for public-private partnerships and a living test area for cutting-edge smart and sustainable technologies. Amongst the countless coffee shops and eateries that have brought the city international acclaim, vital work is being carried out by scholars and policymakers to make Copenhagen one of the most sustainable cities in the world. Recent reports call Copenhagen one of the ‘coolest’ cities to visit in the world, and since 2014 the city has earned countless accolades, such as being named the European Green Capital by the EU and the “Most Livable City” by Monocle. These awards have been earned for success in a number of sustainable development initiatives, ranging from advanced air quality measurement systems, to the implementation of smart street lights, and the promotion of alternative forms of transportation like cycling. (Febiyan on Unsplash) Copenhagen is especially remarkable for its commitment to clean air through ‘Project Air View,’ a unique partnership between Google, university researchers, and the local government. From 2018-2019, a Google Street View car, equipped with air quality measurement technology developed by researchers at Utrecht University, rolled through the streets of Copenhagen to collect information on pollutants in the city’s air. Dr. Roel Vermeulen, Professor of Environmental Epidemiology and Exposome Science at Utrecht University, noted this project “is unique, because it allows us to use actual measurements at street level to map air pollution at an unprecedented resolution in an entire city. This wealth of data will help us to better understand what drives air quality in Copenhagen and what improvements we can make.” In the years that have followed since Project Air View, leaders and researchers in Copenhagen have developed new programs and more advanced technologies to continue monitoring and improving air quality. Since 2016, the city has worked with private firms to develop small, portable measurement devices that can be moved quickly in order to monitor air conditions across Copenhagen. These devices, and the data they collect, have played key roles in informing the decisions of policymakers and promoting legislation that seeks to cut carbon emissions and promote clean air initiatives. Liebrandt, Creative Commons) In order to cut greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality, leaders in Copenhagen found a solution through the development of a sustainable system of transportation. The city is home to an advanced smart mobility network, which combines cutting-edge technology with sustainable development goals to promote a cleaner, healthier lifestyle for residents. The core of the sustainable transit movement in Copenhagen is cycling. The city is home to more bicycles than automobiles, which has compelled leaders to embrace cycling as a sustainable transportation solution. Since the early 2000s, city officials have worked to support cycling through a number of initiatives that have expanded bike lanes, established a bike-sharing program, and made cycling safer. Copenhagen stands out internationally for its ‘Green Wave’ for bicyclists, a program which Dr. Rumia Begum says, “coordinates traffic lights so that cyclists who maintain a 20 km/h travelling speed only see green traffic lights all the way along their commute.” Through increased safety measures and incentives which promote cycling over the use of cars, bikes have become the primary mode of transportation in Copenhagen, and a staple in the city’s sustainable development program. Another staple of Copenhagen’s sustainability efforts is energy efficiency. The city, which plans to become fully carbon neutral by 2025, has addressed energy concerns by turning towards centralized biomass heating, solar and wind power, and smart street lighting to greatly reduce its energy consumption and limit carbon emissions. More than 98% of households throughout the city are connected to a centralized heating system, and the historic City hall building has undergone renovations which have led to an 80% reduction in its total heating usage. Over 22,000 smart streetlights have been installed throughout Copenhagen, which have the ability to increase or decrease luminosity as cyclists and pedestrians pass by. Since their installation these streetlights have slashed the bill for lighting by 76%. In today’s society, we find ourselves faced with the daunting task of finding balance between meeting human needs and reversing years of environmental strain. While there may not be a one-size-fits-all solution, current efforts in cities like Copenhagen are establishing best practices which can be applied in urban centers across the globe. There is no reason to wait, as we see through the case of Copenhagen that the key to achieving sustainability in urban municipalities may be as easy as riding a bike. Efficient and green public transport plays an essential role in achieving this goal. Road traffic is responsible for the vast majority of carbon emissions from the public transport sector in the City of Copenhagen. The high emissions from road traffic increase the amount of air pollution, which in turn can have severe health-related negative impacts on the citizens of Copenhagen. Road traffic also creates a lot of noise pollution. In light of this, one of the larger challenges the City of Copenhagen is currently facing is to ensure CO2 reduction from road traffic and reduce air and noise pollution, in order to increase the quality of Copenhagen’s air, as clean air brings health and environmental benefits with it. Solution In order to eliminate the emission of CO2 and other harmful substances, the City Council of Copenhagen has decided that by 2025, all bus lines should be converted to zero-emission buses. This goal will be reached in collaboration with neighbouring municipalities and Movia, Denmark’s largest public transit agency. Through collaboration, the City of Copenhagen and Movia have created new solutions within the transportation services, which are efficient, green and zero-emission all at once. Result In 2022, 43% of bus operations ran on electricity and the number is expected to rise to 57% by 2023. In 2025, when all buses in the City of Copenhagen are converted from diesel to zero emission, bus travel in the City of Copenhagen alone will save the climate a total of approximately 17,000 tons of CO2 per year all while ensuring cleaner air for the citizens of Copenhagen. Through the implementation of zero emission buses, the City of Copenhagen has taken an important step towards a healthier, greener and carbon-neutral Copenhagen. Copenhagen’s Superkilen: A Model for Culturally Diverse Public Spaces By Zac Fleming (Guest Contributor) https://www.theurbanist.org/2023/04/13/copenhagens-superkilen-a-model-for-culturally-diverse-public-spaces/ April 13, 2023  The Superkilen is creating community in Copenhagen's diverse Nørrebro neighborhood. (Bjark Ingels Group) People seldom associate Copenhagen with urban strife, but before Superkilen was completed in 2012, Nørrebro was known as one of the most dangerous areas of Copenhagen. Gangs made up of people from different ethnicities and backgrounds would often clash there, giving the area the reputation of being unsafe and violent. A neighborhood in constant conflict is not sustainable for the future, no matter how environmentally friendly it may be. To make Nørrebro a better and safer place for its residents, the city of Copenhagen chose to invest in a novel solution that would come to be known as the Superkilen. Superkilen is a public space in Copenhagen designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) in collaboration with Superflex Landscape Architects and Topotek1. The project was completed in 2012 on a half-mile-long “wedge-like” site — hence the name since kilen means wedge in Danish — in Nørrebro, one of the most ethnically diverse areas of Copenhagen.  Superkilen is a seven-acre park that is made up of three main areas: a red square, a black market and a green park. With bike lanes and skateboarding features, it’s friendly to people using active transportation. (BIG) While some firms may have seen its bad reputation as a reason to avoid the area, BIG saw it as an opportunity to create change and togetherness in the community. They set out to design a public space that displayed different cultures in a positive light, where the community could meet and learn about their differences. To achieve this, Superflex deployed teams across the world to retrieve items suggested by residents to be included in the space. Over 60 different nationalities would come to be represented in the park.  The result? Superkilen is now home to a boxing ring from Thailand and bar tools from Brazil among other things. To create this super culturally diverse environment, the designers literally took objects from all over the globe and brought them to the Superkilen. Thus visitors can play basketball on hoops brought from Mogadishu, Somalia, relax next to a star-shaped fountain from Morocco, work out on exercise equipment from Muscle Beach, California, or watch their children play on an octopus slide inspired by Japan. The Superkilen project has helped create a more harmonious community in Nørrebro where different communities and cultures can co-exist, giving the area a great foundation to develop into an environmentally sustainable community. But it also created one of the world’s finest examples of the concept of Just Sustainabilities. Traditionally when people think of the word sustainability, it is most often associated with the notion of renewable energy and the environment. However, when sustainability becomes plural it takes on a different meaning and concept. Popularized by urban planner Julian Agyeman in the 2000’s, the Just Sustainabilities concept argues that development of environmentally friendly infrastructure can sometimes create more discrimination. While gentrification of less desirable areas and moving towards “smart” cities has positives when it comes to environmental factors, many social barriers can be created when new spaces cater to certain demographics such as higher income individuals or families. Barriers to entry such as rising property prices in these developed areas can drive away certain groups making such areas less diverse. To remedy this problem, Just Sustainabilities aims to work alongside the usual policies and developments associated with sustainability while creating a higher standard of living for all people in the present that will still hold up for future generations. The concept aims to create diverse and inclusive infrastructure that coincides with the ideals of eco-friendly areas. Social welfare and quality of life are just as important for the future as renewable energy and reduced emissions if we are aiming to build for the future. The Superkilen is not the only example of the Just Sustainabilities concept at work. London, England’s “Altab Ali Park” is another fantastic example. Constructed in 2011, Altab Ali Park shares its name with the victim of a racially motivated murder in May 1978 on a street adjacent to the current location of the park. The park now often plays host to public speeches, political debates, and peaceful protests where different communities can share their views with others in a space shared by all. Like the Superkilen, Altab Ali Park features items that represent the community it is situated within, creating a space that portrays the diversity of the neighborhood. (Matt from London, Creative Commons) Traveling across the Atlantic, BIG once again designed with Just Sustainabilities in mind with the development of Manhattan’s “The Big U.” Due to be completed in 2026, The Big U is a 10-mile-long park that is set to run along the banks of Hudson creating a barrier that will protect lower Manhattan from floods. The project was devised as a direct response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy and the damage it caused, especially low-income neighborhoods that struggled to recover. The park will respond to specific neighborhood needs and add much needed amenities requested by the communities it surrounds. The Big U will create much needed social spaces that represent the areas it affects and connect different groups that were previously isolated socially. Examples like the Superkilen, Altab Ali Park, and Big U show us how designing with people in mind using the Just Sustainabilities framework puts social welfare and diversity at the heart of new environmentally friendly places. But there is reason to predict planetary temperatures could moderate soon, though they would remain far above old normals because of human-caused global warming. Sign up for the Climate Coach newsletter, in your inbox every Tuesday and Thursday. “If 2024 continues to follow its expected trajectory, global temperatures will fall out of record territory in the next month or two,” Zeke Hausfather, a climate scientist with the payments company Stripe, wrote in a newsletter. Average global air temperatures April 2024 was an 11th consecutive month in which planetary warmth surged into unprecedented territory, though the margins of more recent records have diminished. But data suggests a diminishing trend in the margins by which average global temperatures are setting records. Hausfather called it “gobsmackingly bananas” when September set a new monthly average global temperature record by an unprecedented margin of 0.5 degrees Celsius. October set a record by a margin that was nearly as large and marked what was then the hottest 12-month period ever observed. Preliminary data shows last month was 0.1 to 0.2 degrees Celsius warmer than the next-hottest April, a significant margin but relatively closer to past observations. Climate scientists said it could be a sign that the surge of global warmth over the past year is beginning to wane, if only slightly. That is because of the imminent end of a historically strong episode of the planet-warming climate pattern El Niño, which began nearly a year ago. During El Niño, warm waters pool along the equator in the eastern and central Pacific Ocean, releasing heat into the atmosphere and triggering extreme heat waves, droughts and floods around the world. Climate models suggest that a rapid switch to the relative cooling influence of La Niña appears increasingly likely this summer or fall. During La Niña, cooler-than-average surface temperatures dominate the eastern and central equatorial Pacific. That could mean this year approaches but does not quite match the record average global heat observed on an annual basis in 2023, scientists said. Berkeley Earth climate scientist Robert Rohde recently predicted 2024 would end as the warmest or second-warmest year on record. Hausfather said that while the year has so far averaged about 1.7 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels, before the influence of humans’ fossil fuel consumption began, it is likely to end about 1.5 degrees above that benchmark. How rapidly global temperatures moderate, if at all, will be key in gauging whether climate change is accelerating, NASA climate scientist Gavin Schmidt wrote in a Nature column in March. If La Niña develops and the record warmth does not moderate, it could signal that humans have “fundamentally altered” Earth’s climate system, he said. For now, the spate of unprecedented global heat continues to be felt around the world. April began with a heat wave across West Africa that was so intense, an analysis determined it would have been “virtually impossible” without the influence of human-caused planetary warming. The month ended with a stretch of record-setting heat across Southeast Asia, with temperatures surging well above 100 degrees and up to 120 degrees in some areas from India to the Philippines. The image shows how much the temperature will have risen in 2100, at 2 meters above the surface and compared to the period 1979-2000.  The image below shows a progressive temperature rise reaching 4.589°C in 2100 compared to the same period, i.e. 1979-2000 and in a CMIP6 SSP585 scenario.  The 1979-2000 period is relatively recent. The temperature has been rising for longer than that. The image below shows a progressive temperature rise reaching 4.91°C by 2100 in a CMIP6 SSP585 scenario when instead using a 1901-2000 period as a base.  The 1901-2000 period is also relatively recent, much later than pre-industrial. When using a pre-industrial base, the temperature rise will be well over 5°C. As illustrated by the top image, the temperature rise over land will be much higher than over oceans, which makes the situation even more dire, given that most people live on land and could face a rise of 8°C by 2100 in a CMIP6 SSP585 scenario. In a CMIP6 SSP585 scenario, temperatures are projected to keep rising strongly beyond 2100, as illustrated by the image below, from a 2016 paper by Brian O'Neill et al.  In the study by Brian O'Neill et al., CO₂ emissions keep rising until 2100, to then fall gradually to current levels, while the CO₂ concentration in the atmosphere keep rising, to remain at levels beyond 2000 ppm and result in a temperature rise of 8°C by 2300 in a CMIP6 SSP585 scenario. Is CMIP6 SSP585 the worst-case scenario? To check whether CMIP6 SSP585 is indeed the worst-case scenario, one can look at how fast CO₂ is rising. According to the IEA, global energy-related CO₂ emissions grew in 2023, reaching a new record high of 37.4 Gt (or 10.098 GtC). The image below, from a recent post, confirms the recent acceleration in CO₂ concentrations, while showing the potential for CO₂ concentration to cross 1200 ppm before the year 2060.  In other words, CO₂ may well be rising even faster than anticipated in a CMIP6 SSP585 scenario, while this scenario doesn't take into account the potential for CO₂e concentrations to cross 1200 ppm much earlier than 2100 (inset), e.g. before 2060 as illustrated by the red trend in the main image. Furthermore, CMIP6 SSP585 doesn't take into account that, in addition to the temperature rise resulting from high greenhouse gas concentrations, crossing the clouds tipping point at 1200 ppm in itself would push up temperatures by a further 8°C. Indeed, the clouds tipping point could be crossed even earlier when also taking into account methane, nitrous oxide and further greenhouse gases, while there are additional developments such as carbon release from soils that could further raise both CO₂ concentrations and temperatures. The Extinction page and posts such as this one and this one warn about the potential for a temperature rise of well over 18°C unfolding as early as 2026. The IPCC has persistently downplayed the potential for these dangerous developments. The IPCC keeps hiding the need for the most effective climate action, while the IPCC instead keeps pointing at less effective policies such as support for BECCS and biofuel, and while the IPCC also keeps making it look as if there was a carbon budget to divide among polluters, as if polluters could continue to pollute for decades to come, as discussed in earlier posts such as this one. Meanwhile, a 2018 study (by Strona & Bradshaw) indicates that most life on Earth will disappear with a 5°C rise. Humans, who depend for their survival on many other species, will likely go extinct with a 3°C rise, as illustrated by the image below, from an earlier post. Today that coral outcrop, or bommie, shines snow white. Prof Terry Hughes, a coral bleaching expert at James Cook University, estimates this living boulder is at least 300 years old. “If that thing had eyes it could have looked up and watched Captain Cook sail past,” he says, back on the pristine beach of this speck of an island 80km offshore at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef. It is not just Heron’s grand old bommie that is freshly bleached. The surrounding tangle of staghorn corals, or Acropora, are splashed in swathes of white, or painted a dappled mosaic of greens and browns that betray the algae and seaweeds growing over the freshly killed coral. Hughes estimates 90% of those branching corals are dead or dying. Snorkelling above these blighted coral thickets evokes the imagery of forests annihilated by bushfires, or cities obliterated by missiles. “It looks as if it has been carpet bombed,” says the Greens senator Peter Whish-Wilson, who has accompanied Hughes to Heron. “Like limbs strewn everywhere.” Even Hughes, a man who has witnessed as much mass mortality of coral as any, looks shellshocked. The Dublin-born, Townsville-based marine biologist already knew the coral ringing Heron had just experienced its worst recorded bleaching – and that this was no isolated event. It’s fucking awful … it’s a graveyard out there, Terry Hughes Last month the Australian Institute of Marine Science and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority released a report warning that the reef was experiencing “the highest levels of thermal stress on record”. The authority’s chief scientist, Dr Roger Beeden, spoke of extensive and uniform bleaching across the southern reefs, which had dodged the worst of much of the previous four mass bleaching events to blight the Great Barrier Reef since 2016. Hughes saw in the institute’s aerial surveys results the most “widespread event and severe” bleaching event to date, not just in the south, but across much of the entire system – which stretches 2,300km up the Queensland coast. Aerial video shows mass coral bleaching on Great Barrier Reef amid global heat stress event – video CLICK LINK ABOVE But none of these metrics, it seems, could truly prepare him for the act of bearing witness to the unfolding calamity he has dedicated his life to preventing. “It’s fucking awful,” the softly spoken scientist says, emerging from the ocean. “They said the bleaching was extensive and uniform. They didn’t say it was extensive, uniform and fucking awful. “It’s a graveyard out there.” Lethal hot water The academic director of the University of Queensland research station on Heron, Dr Selina Ward, doesn’t mince words either. She describes this as “the year from hell”. Storm surges washed away some of her favourite stands of corals, there have been outbreaks of coral-eating crown-of-thorns starfish, cyclones and floods. But these “multiple assaults” pale compared with this most “horrendous bleaching”. The bleaching peaked in February and March. At the end of March, Ward visited 16 sites around Heron and nearby reefs, including around One Tree Island – a scientific reserve with “the maximum level of protection you can get”. “It was terrible, the worst bleaching event I’ve ever seen,” she says. “In those 16 sites, every single one was severely bleached – and some of the corals were starting to die already.” Her big question, though, is what is happening under the water right now. Corals bleach when sustained exposure to warmer than average water causes them to expel the photosynthetic algae that give them colour – and from which the corals polyps obtain much of their nutrients. A coral can die or recover from bleaching. The weeks that follow a bleaching event are a brief window in which scientists like Ward and Hughes can assess how many corals have starved without their symbiotic algae. In a few months, those newly dead corals will be covered in weed and beginning to be broken down into barren rubble piles – the time and cause of their demise will become more and more obscured. The reef is now in that window, Ward says, where scientists can get into the water and observe the amount of bleached corals that – though left more vulnerable to disease and less fertile – might just regain colour and pull through. As well as those that will not. But bleaching is only one coral reaction to what Hughes says is perhaps better described as a hot water event. Some corals will simply “cook”. Others turn a vivid blue or neon yellow – a garish shade our research vessel’s skipper says has been widespread on the corals around Heron. These, though dazzling, are also disconcerting – this fluorescence is a protein corals produce as a kind of sunscreen. It is not a very effective defence though. According to Hughes, most of these neon corals won’t survive. “The irony is that it looks beautiful in death,” Whish-Wilson says of a fluorescent coral while he and Hughes wade through knee-deep water as the tide recedes around Heron and coral tips emerge from the water like bones.  The unseen national emergency After the summer of 2023-24, the Great Barrier Reef is awash in cruel irony and dissonance. The first strikes the traveller to Heron as its Islander catamaran departs its berth and rounds a canal into Gladstone’s harbour. A hulking and rusty bow is slowly revealed as a bulk carrier connected, by crane-like loaders, to great mounds of crushed black earth. Behind it, another ship is being loaded with coal. And another behind that. Then, as the catamaran rounds Curtis Island, it ducks and weaves its way through bulk carrier after bulk carrier, lurking outside the harbour like a school of sharks at the edge of a reef. On his phone’s shipping app, Hughes lists 43 of the steel leviathans. Whish-Wilson says the flotilla speaks to a government having “a bet each way”. “But you can’t have a future for fossil fuels and a future for a healthy reef,” he says. “You just can’t.” Later, reflecting on a trip he already feels will haunt the rest of his life, the Greens healthy oceans spokesperson says this devastating bleaching should trigger Unesco to declare the Great Barrier Reef’s world heritage values as “in danger” and demand a visit from the federal environment minister, as well as a declaration of national emergency. If this were a bushfire raging across thousands of kilometres, he says, that declaration would already have been made. “But because it is in the ocean, it is out of mind, out of sight.” Slim hope of recovery Another of Heron’s incongruities is that, even amid such underwater devastation, it still harbours breathtaking beauty. Green sea turtles cruise above stands of broken coral, giant coral trout open their mouths and gills for electric blue cleaner wrasse, manta rays glide gracefully through the shallows. Hughes first came here as a postdoctoral researcher in 1985 and has often returned. Now, as he prepares to leave Heron once more, he ponders the future of a natural wonder of the world to which he has given so much of his life. The 67-year-old has seen the coral ecosystems of the Great Barrier Reef degrade and knows that they are on the inexorable path of further decline. Yet, if global heating can be limited to well below 2C on pre-industrial levels, Hughes still believes it is possible to stabilise sea temperatures and allow those corals that survive to mount a slow recovery. It is not a question of hope or resignation, he says, but “immediate action”. Unless fossil fuel emissions are cut “ASAP”, he says, the corals of the world’s reefs will be replaced by something else, perhaps seaweed or sponges. “There would still be a tropical ecosystem here,” Hughes says with a sweep of his hand. “But at some point we would have to say it is no longer a coral reef. We’d have to call it something else.” So when will Hughes return to Heron to see what, if anything, recovers? Will he check on that grand old bommie, now snow white? “I’m not sure I will come back,” he says. And why not? To this, a long pause, as Hughes looks away and out at the ocean, the only sound a choked sob and the haunting wail of the black noddies that brood and swarm on this troubled coral cay. “’Cause it’s so upsetting,” he says, eventually. Not that Hughes plans on staying silent. “I think scientists like me need to be as vocal as possible,” he says. “To show people what’s happening.” April temperatures in Bangladesh hottest on record: forecaster  Bangladesh last month saw the hottest average April temperatures since the country began keeping weather records in 1948, a senior forecaster told AFP on Wednesday. "2024 was the hottest April since 1948 in terms of hot days and area coverage in the country," Bangladesh Meteorological Department senior forecaster Muhammad Abul Kalam Mallik said. Bangladesh remains in the grips of a suffocating heatwave that prompted authorities to close schools nationwide, with temperatures not expected to moderate until Thursday. "This year the heatwave covered around 80 percent of the country. We've not seen such unbroken and expansive heatwaves before," Mallik said. Mallik said the 30-year average daily temperature for April between 1981 and 2010 was 33.2 degrees Celsius, but this year weather stations around the country recorded temperatures of between two and eight degrees higher. He added that Bangladesh had not seen the usual pre-monsoon April thunderstorms which normally cools the South Asian nation ahead of summer. "Bangladesh gets an average 130.2 millimetres of rain in April. But this April we got an average of one millimetre of rain," he said. Mallik said the bureau was checking data to confirm whether this year marked record low rainfalls for April. Three heat waves swept northwestern Vietnam and areas from Thanh Hoa to Phu Yen last month, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting. Heat waves boiled all of northern and central Vietnam during the April 26-April 30 period, with certain areas recording temperatures of up to 43 degrees. Average temperatures in northern and central Vietnam were 2-4 degrees higher than during the same period over the last several year.
Other regions also recorded average temperatures 1-3 degrees higher than in previous periods. Last year, the hottest month was May, when five heat waves broke 44 temperature records. This year, 39 records were broken on April 27 alone across several areas nationwide. April 27 was the hottest day of the month. In Hanoi, all five weather stations in the city observed record temperatures on April 27. A station in Son Tay, for example, had its April 27, 1998 record temperature of 37.8 degrees broken by this April 27's 40.4 degrees. Also on April 27, temperatures at Ha Nam's Phu Ly station reached 41.8 degrees, the highest ever recorded since a weather station was installed in the area. This also broke a 1996 record by nearly three degrees. In April, two stations recorded temperatures of 44 degrees: Nghe An's Tuong Duong recorded the high on April 30, and Quang Tri's Dong Ha recorded it on April 28. The mark was only slightly lower than Vietnam's highest temperature ever recorded: 44.2 degrees on May 7 last year. Some 14 temperature records were also broken in southern Vietnam last month. On April 9, the previously highest temperature recorded in Dong Nai of 38.6 degrees was broken after 11 years, with temperatures rising to 39.5 degrees. On April 16, Binh Duong broke its previous temperature record set in 2016 by one degree with a temperature at 39.9 degrees. Nguyen Van Huong, head of the weather forecast department under the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said abnormal heat waves in northern and central Vietnam were due to the impacts of low-pressure areas in the west, which resulted in Foehn winds. Other contributing factors include the impacts of El Nino and global warming. Meteorologists have anticipated that temperatures across Vietnam in May will be 1.5-2.5 degrees higher than in previous years. Low-pressure areas will continue to exert their effects in northern Vietnam and localities from Thanh Hoa to Phu Yen, according to scientists. Heat waves are also expected to persist in the Central Highlands and southern Vietnam, with a focus on the first 20 days of May.
