Here’s why the real unemployment rate may be higher than reported PUBLISHED FRI, JUN 5 20201:29 PM EDTUPDATED FRI, JUN 5 20205:21 PM EDT The unemployment rate in the U.S. improved last month as millions of people returned to the workforce. But the official 13.3% unemployment rate, while still high relative to any point since the Great Depression in the early 20th century, likely understates the economic damage wrought by the coronavirus pandemic. The real unemployment rate is likely at least 16%, according to the federal government. That would mean roughly 1 in 6 people can’t find work. The Bureau of Labor Statistics, which published its monthly jobs report Friday morning, admitted the official unemployment rate may be low relative to reality due to an error in data collection. Furloughed workers Around 21 million Americans were unemployed as of mid-May, a reduction of 2.1 million people from a month earlier, according to BLS data. That number includes workers who were furloughed — meaning those who were temporarily laid off — by their companies in recent weeks. More than 15 million workers — about 73% — of the total unemployed are on temporary layoff and expect to be recalled to work once business rebounds. Yet the BLS may have severely undercounted the number of workers classified as “unemployed on temporary layoff” due to an error, the agency said. The BLS determines how many people are unemployed based on a household survey. Survey interviewers misclassified several furloughed workers as being “absent from work due to ‘other reasons,’” according to the BLS. That’s the same category of workers who’d be on vacation, for example. 16.3% unemployment rate. The overall unemployment rate would have been “about 3 percentage points higher than reported” if those individuals had been identified correctly, according to the agency. (The estimate isn’t seasonally adjusted.) That would put the official unemployment rate at 16.3%. The true rate could be higher still. The unemployment rate doesn’t include the share of workers who may have dropped out of the workforce, perhaps due to feeling pessimistic about the chances of finding a job in the current economy. More than 6 million workers have dropped out of the labor force since February. In fact, the unemployment rate is a much-higher 21.2% as judged by another metric. This metric, which the BLS calls U-6, includes people “marginally attached to the labor force.” These are people who aren’t currently working or looking for work but are available for work, as well as part-time employees who want and are available for full-time work but have had to settle for part-time employment. The U-6 metric doesn’t include the workers misclassified by the agency. Of course, furloughed workers could be recalled back to work quickly, depending on the speed of the economic rebound as states begin to reopen certain business sectors. The unemployment rate would likely rebound faster in this eventuality than if the layoffs were permanent. The same misclassification phenomenon occurred in April, too — the official 14.7% unemployment rate would have been nearly 20% if furloughed workers had been identified correctly, the BLS said. “BLS and the Census Bureau are investigating why this misclassification error continues to occur and are taking additional steps to address the issue,” the agency said Friday in the jobs report. “According to usual practice, the data from the household survey are accepted as recorded,” the agency said. “To maintain data integrity, no ad hoc actions are taken to reclassify survey responses.”

I am sending it because John Moultrup was in Germany when this was shot. At the very end of the war. I have had a growing realization that his tour of duty was actually far more intense and difficult than he ever let on, for a very different reason. Being in Germany at the end of the war was to be in a place of complete and total social disintegration and dissolution. These shots show that, in painful reality. Somehow they got a superb colorization. I don’t know if there was color film back then, or if this is some how colorized digitally. But it really works. Seeing the looks of emptiness on the faces. Seeing the German soldiers as POW’s @ 9:00, seeing the complete destruction of the country. Seeing Russian soldiers, with Amerian soldiers, etc., all being the victors, was intense. It is all a very sobering statement as to the real cost of war. The war officially ended on 5/8/45. It was clear that as the Allies made their way through the country, the war was over for some parts of Germany before that actual date. So there is no doubt in my mind that John Moultrup saw stuff that was too painful to talk about. He flew about 6 combat missions during April, 1945. Then the combat missions stopped. But relatively soon he was involved in “flying bigwigs around the country”. I think he may have switched from a B-17 to a DC3, but I’m not positive about that. He stayed in Germany until maybe February, 1946. I think I may have that date in the book. I was always aware of the fact that Dad simply would not talk about anything from that time. I have a strong sense that there was more in the memory bank than he let out. I do wish that he could have seen the book that captured his momentos. I hope that the book acts as a testament to the type of war experiences that he had. He didn’t have to deal with bullets. He always said that by the time he got there, the Luftwaffe was gone, and it was easy for him. That’s only partly true. Report: The Kochs, A Nazi Past, Oil & The Foundation of The Right Notorious Nazis Ilse Koch, her husband Karl Otto Koch and Erich Koch are the ghosts of Koch Industries, who seized the U.S. conservative political agenda years ago and seem capable of seizing the government in total through the Tea Party. Ilse Koch was the Nazi’s specialist in making objects from human skin; was the only woman charged with war crimes; and along with her husband was in charge of one of the most horrific horror camps in Nazi Germany. Koch Industries is the child of the violence of Buchenwald, widely regarded as one of wartime Germany’s most notorious “death camps”. Information connecting Ilse and Koch Industries is hard to find but is a string of fragments, pieces of information that connects the American and German Kochs and this connection gives us a clear image of the sentiment behind the Tea Party and conservative American politics since the 1950s. Besides evidence the American Koch was related to Ilse’s family, Erich Koch (a high level Nazi official in charge of Prussia) invites Fred Koch to sell his oil in Nazi Germany when he is banned from doing business in the US. After the fall of Nazi Germany, Erich Koch and Fred expand the oil empire to the Soviet Union. Erich Koch had been in charge of Prussia for Hitler so his ties to the Soviet Union ran deep. A few years later the Soviets took Fred Koch’s oil and prosecuted Erich for war crimes – Fred Koch returned to the US, became anti-communist, and was allowed to do business in the States again. American Fred Koch, and through association the Kochs from Germany, establish the John Birch Society in the 1950s in NY, which becomes the policy center for American conservatives. The society was built on Fred Koch’s oil money in the 1950s and can be thought of as the center of neo-conservative politics as well as the Tea Party movement. He was sentenced to death on March 9, 1959 by the district court in Warsaw for having planned, prepared and organised the mass murder of civilians. Russians thought he possessed information about art looted by the Nazis during the war. Years after the war, Koch stood trial in Poland and was convicted in 1959 of war crimes and sentenced to death. The sentence was commuted to life imprisonment a year later. Brother of Erich Koch, Karl Otto Koch ….(August 2, 1897 – April 5, 1945), a Standartenführer (Colonel) in the German Schutzstaffel (SS), was the first commandant of the Nazi concentration camps at Buchenwald. On August 1, 1937 he was given command of the new concentration camp at Buchenwald. Investigation into his improper conduct at Buchenwald included corruption, fraud, embezzlement, drunkenness, sexual offences and a murder. Koch’s orders to kill prisoners at the camp were revealed, as well as embezzlement of property stolen from prisoners. Ilse Koch Koch married Ilse Köhler with whom he had a son and two daughters. Köhler later became known as “The BUTCHER of Buchenwald. She was accused of taking souvenirs from the skin of murdered inmates with distinctive tattoos. After she had served two years, General Lucius D. Clay, the interim military governor of the American Zone in Germany, pardoned her. Owing to international condemnation, however, Koch was re-arrested in 1949 and tried before a West German court for instigation to murder in 135 cases. She was sentenced to life imprisonment on January 15, 1951. She committed suicide by hanging herself at Aichach women’s prison on September 1, 1967. Fred Chase Koch ….(September 23, 1900 – November 17, 1967) chemical engineer and founded the TEXACO oil refinery firm that later became Koch Industries (Chevron). Koch and its customers were sued for patent infringement, process for turning crude oil into gasoline. Litigation effectively put Winkler-Koch out of business in the U.S. for several years.
